bwOSLMS Project

As part of the bwOpenSource Learning Management Systems (bwOSLMS) project and the “Future Lab: Universities in the Digital World” dialog process, two learning management systems, Moodle and ILIAS, will be sustainably developed moving forward. This project is a cooperation between Baden-Württemberg's universities and the Baden-Württemberg University Network for the Digitization of Teaching (HND-BW).

Project description

The open-source learning management systems ILIAS and Moodle are fundamental components of digital teaching at most universities in Baden-Württemberg. They also play a central role at many other universities. ILIAS is also used for conducting electronic exams.

Therefore, a key pillar of the central digitization strategy of Baden-Württemberg's universities will emphasize the expansion and strengthening of both open-source systems.

To ensure the long-term viability of both learning platforms, specific actions and areas of work have been identified that are particularly important to robustly and reliably support digital teaching and examination scenarios at the state’s universities:

ILIAS area of work

Multiple actions are planned to ensure the secure operation of ILIAS and to strengthen its examination functionalities.

The individual work packages are:

  • Continuation of maintenance for the ECS connector for CampusConnect (University of Stuttgart)
  • Maintenance and development of essential plugins (University of Mannheim)
  • Sustainable development of the system architecture for secure and reliable operation of ILIAS (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT))
  • Upgrading and expanding EDUTIEK, a plugin originally developed for law exams, for other disciplines with text-intensive exams, especially in the humanities and social sciences (University of Freiburg)
  • Further development of test and assessment components for electronic exams (University of Hohenheim)

Moodle area of work

The aim is to establish a cross-university bwMoodle community and to evaluate interfaces for connecting HISinONE and CAMPUSonline to Moodle.

The individual work packages:

  • Establishment and coordination of a “bwMoodle community” of Moodle-using universities in Baden-Württemberg (Office of the Baden-Württemberg University Network for the Digitization of Teaching (HND-BW))
  • Functional requirements, specifications, and market study: Interfaces Solutions for HISinONE and CAMPUSonline integration (University of Heidelberg and University of Tübingen)
  • Investigation of the implementation of prototypical solutions for CMS-LMS integration (University of Heidelberg and University of Tübingen)
